BEES

Bumblebees and things you need to know about them!

December 1, 2017 by Cynthia

Bees in Brooklyn

Although they have been continuously depicted in various forms of media as a sort of cartoonish character, it doesn’t make bees any less dangerous than they are. Usually recognized as the principal source of honey, bees in Brooklyn are in fact hazardous creatures which can cause serious damages to human property and livelihood. They threaten our homes and furniture, especially wooden items, and also pose a danger to our lives if handled carelessly.

These small and seemingly insignificant insects have a significant role to play in this world, and even though humans view them generally as a sort of nuisance, they prove to be crucial regarding maintaining the ecological balance.

While it may seem that bees are a rare occurrence to some people, they are in fact quite widespread and have several equally diverse species found all over the world. While some of these species are harmful and dangerous to humans, some even serve to help us in some ways.

Following are the principal types of bees, and a few tidbits on what makes them unique.

Bees in Brooklyn: The Various Types

Carpenter Bees

Bee

Just like termites, we have carpenter bees as well. True to their name, these bees love wood and live inside it by drilling long tunnels, which effectively damage your furniture beyond repair. They can even cause severe structural damage and thus must be removed at the earliest.

Honeybees

Honeybees, or the most common one of the different types of bees, are usually orange or black in color and live in large hives, making them social insects. They are not dominantly aggressive but will sting you if you happen to disturb them.

Killer Bees

Next, we have killer bees who, true to their name have a reputation for chasing their victims for about quarter of a mile if they happen to get angry or if you did something to irk them. Although their stings are painful, they can’t fatally harm since they are not venomous.

Also, their stingers tend to get torn off after attacking once. But that doesn’t mean that you’ll get attacked only once, since they tend to always stay in large numbers, giving them quite an edge over you in a chase.

Bumblebees

Bumblebees are one of the most recognizable of all the different species of bees since they are the ones that have the striped yellow and black patterns on their bodies that is almost signature to bees. They have a fuzzy appearance and have been known to sting if disturbed.

A lot of people are curious about the answer to the question, do bumblebees sting. Well, they do. The important fact here is that bumblebees can actually sting you multiple times, as their stingers are firmly attached to their bodies and do not readily break off even if they use it to sting. They build their nests out of pollen, or lumps of it and the location varies from the ground, grass or abandoned nests.

The Role Bumblebees They Play

For all the threat they pose, bumblebees still are quite beneficial insects. They, in fact, are responsible carrying out a lot of the pollination which increases the yield of our crops drastically.

In fact, some countries like New Zealand have been known to import bumblebees merely because they were needed to pollinate the forage crop clover. Because of their adaptability to extreme temperatures and long tongues, bumblebees are the best pollinators among bees.

As beneficial as they are, bees are still dangerous, and a nuisance. Handling them without professional’s help can lead to severe accidents.
